Pottery painting tips

Paints

We use underglaze paints on our pottery which appear pale when first painted on. The colours will appear brighter once they have been glazed and fired!

1 coat of paint = Transparent

3 coats of paint = Opaque

We recommend using the light colours first and dark colours last.

Pencil

You can plan out your design using a regular pencil before you start. Any pencil left on your pottery will burn away completely during the firing - so make sure you go over anything you want to keep in paint!

We also have ceramic pencils available to use in the studio. These are permanent and are great for doing outlines or adding detail.

Glazing + Firing

Once your pottery is finished we will glaze and fire it for you in our kiln. Your piece will be ready to collect approximately 1 week later.
